One of the things we did was visit music venues. Living in Redding, we are pretty well music-starved unless you like country & western, not to dis C&W but it doesn't take much to be enough for me.

.
Near Leidseplein there are numerous places you can enjoy some blues or jazz. We didn't go into Bourbon Street because it didn't open until 10 PM or so, and by then we were kind of starting to wind down.
.

Another place we did not actually visit, mainly because it cost 19.50 Euros (that's about $30 US), although I'm sure it was good. Not $30 worth of good, though.

.
This was at the Cafe Alto, also by Leidseplein. There was no charge to get in before 9 PM, so we wandered in and bought a couple of drinks, found a place to comfortably wedge ourselves during the show (under the stairs to the restrooms, where we could see the stage perfectly well), and enjoyed the show.

If you go to the Netherlands, try some genever. It's kind of like tequila in taste, although they say it's more like gin.

.
I wish I knew who this guy was. The guy with the Billy Idol hair was the main attraction. The band played standards like "Misty" and "The Shadow of Your Smile;" he played sax like Stan Getz.

.
Gary and the bass player.

We tried another place called The Watering Hole. One night there was a three-piece power trio that did covers of '70's songs, but did their own arrangements - we liked them. The next time we went there was a band that was like Foghat, Alice Cooper, and Aerosmith combined, and we were considerably less impressed. (I know my sister-in-law is the The World's Biggest Areosmith Fan, but I don't really share her enthusiasm.)

Are the statues supposed to be The Blues Brothers in the first picture? Awesome!

Yes! Amsterdam is an amazing city of contrasts - the canals, the four-story buildings with the beautiful facades, the very mixed bag of people living there - and a huge appreciation for music of all kinds.

It sounds like fun, though I'm not much into clubbing. I'm more into sleeping.

I'm not a big clubber either (in the sense that 20-somethings are), but I do like to go hear music now and then. We did plenty of sleeping too.

You and Gary find the coolest clubs. I wish we had gone to more places in Florence, but I was always so pooped by 9:00. If only we had made it to that gay nightclud...

I know there was one called Tabasco - I remember that name - and a couple of others. One was pretty close to the apartment but I don't think we ever located it.

I love the variety of experiences you had on your holiday. You just didn't do the touristy things.

There are plenty of touristy things to do, all right, but there is so much more - and those things are what you remember.
