I need to paint my house. It was last painted over ten years ago, by me, and after I finished that I decided that was all the house painting I ever intended to do. It is one of those jobs that I will gladly pay someone to do.

The east side on the house looks fine, though faded. I never did paint the south side so it looks crappy. Part of the north side looks fine; the other part plus the west side look horrid due to a combination of summer sun exposure and moisture from the swamp cooler. Major peeling going on.

So. I know someone who does very good work for a reasonable price - he painted the other house and did a terrific job. If I prep the house (sand off the really nasty peeling bits and cut back the blackberries), I can keep the costs to a minimum. I don't actually have the money right now, but I hope that will change soon.

No, this is not my house.
.

.
But it looks enough like my house & the setting my house is in to give me an idea.

I really like the moss green in the picture above. I've been dithering about the color - my home is in the country and I prefer the house blend into the landscape, rather than a really bright electric blue or pink or slate gray, no urban colors.

Must ponder this.

There are software packages, some for sale $10, some free that you can play with paint manufacturers colors and your home style or a scanned image of your actual house.

I have the Benjamin Moore one, and it's a bit complex to play with. The free Sherwin Williams one is easier. Have fun.

Wow - someone has a really nice house!
Do you have a word to describe that type of house?? Like in real estate terms?
I really like the colour. I like the contrasting white too.

Yes, it's a California bungalow or sometimes called a California Craftsman. It was a very, very popular style from about 1900-1930; in the older sections of towns you'll see quite a few, as well as all kinds of spin-offs - some very ornate, some plainer.

Oh yes. That's what they're called here too - californian bungalow. I wasn't sure if it was just some cheesy name that realtors made up to sell it. But they look just like that. And they're very expensive of course, cause they're well built and they dont come like that any more.

If they are kept up they will last virtually forever. I suppose when they were built they were fairly economical. How times do change.

In all my real estate paperwork mine is called a California bungalow, so I always imagine it's one the smaller scale of homes.

I like it too. It's unusual but not gaudy and I think it would go well in this setting.

some greens can go really, really wrong. That green looks pretty right, though. I like it. Especially with the white accents.

Oh indeed. I painted my bathroom green and the next time I walked in it was like, "AAAUUUGGHHHHHH!" I had to repaint two walls and the ceiling and add some accents to make it OK.

You'll have to let me know who you're using because while my house probably doesn't need a paint job, I hate the white. I just don't think it suits it. I'm leaning towards the tans.

You're under the Italian influence. And I do think a more natural color would enhance the entire property and blend in with your yard.

I've always thought so too. White just isn't the right color for this house, although the people I bought it from clearly thought so. California Bungalow needs to be more traditional. White belongs on Cape Cod style homes, not mine.

Send said house painter down here? Does he own a sand blaster? We've got peeling paint that's going to require that.

I don't know if he has a sand blaster - probably a pressure washer. House painting is not his full-time job; he used to do it and now does ?? something else. He painted my other house in a weekend or two after Gary prepped it. Very nice guy - he brought his kids one day (who are very well-behaved) and put them to work filling in cracks & that sort of thing.

For what it's worth, I think that's a wonderful color, especially with the light trim. I'd say go for it :-)

"Fun" is not a word I associate with house painting, although "entertaining" might be appropriate if someone else is doing the work.

My house had beige siding on it, in the midst, or up next to the forest! Ick.

I was painting an area black to put behind a waterfall mural, but the siding made strips between the black, making it look like an old wooden country home.

My teens came out and said, "Paint it all!"

Two hours later and a gallon of black paint and a roller, we had a black wooden house with the lighter rows of chinking!

Not bad! I don't envy the one stroke after another method you have ahead of you.

I do have a paint sprayer... but actually I hope to get someone to paint it for me so I can sit and drink iced tea and watch them. (Well, I'd fix them an iced tea also.)
