Today at work I attempted to Xerox some papers. Message on the copy machine: close drawer 1. Tried to close it - wouldn't close. I got down on the floor and pulled the drawer out as far as it would go and peeked back. Waaaayyyy in the back was a crumpled-up paper. I couldn't figure out how to open the machine enough to get it out and my arm wouldn't fit.

Went and got [info]supermatt41 because he is smart about stuff like this. He studied the situation, then got a ruler and affixed a circle of tape to one end. He poked the ruler back, back into the copy machine and somehow managed to stick the tape onto the crumpled paper and pull it out that way.

We both admitted we were amazed that worked.

With absolutely no disrespect intended, that is the quintessential "stick into the anthill" method, and a wonderful application of extremely old, primitive technology to a very complex modern technology.

One wonders how the paper got crumpled.

When the copy machine is about to break down, it starts crumpling paper. I am certain that it crumpled it, and whoevere was using it at the time attempted to retrieve it, gave up, and left it for the next person to fix.

What SHOULD have happened was the ruler should have fallen into the copier and I should have gotten toner on my arm and sleeve. Once in a while the exact right thing happens, much to our amazement.

If you hadn't been there to see it, I'm not sure anyone would have believed me.
